History of Compressors
Divers have always relied on the ability of producing, storing and supplying compressed air.
Initially, breathing air was lowered into stationary dive bells by means of wooden casks that were kept upright by lead weights.
Thereafter, manually operated air pumps channel breathing air to divers via water-proofed linen hoses. Clearly, the reliability of this assembly was rather restricted Wilhelm Bauer first used a manual air pump during the salvaging operation of the postal steamship MS "Ludwig".
Steam-powered compressors became increasingly popular during the early 19th century, as a reliable power source for tools, machines and elevators.
